Sounds great!  A really think a recording of both events is in order... ;-)

Will they be selling doughnuts at the concerts?

Subject: [CB] Fox Contra stand

In response to a question off-line, I finally tried using the Fox
contrabassoon stand for the Leblanc 340 contrabass clarinet.  It
works!  Best results if you retract the peg so that it sticks out
3-4", but it also works with the peg fully extended (e.g., for those
quick pit orchestra instrument changes).  I wouldn't retract the peg
all the way, because the peg receiver on the stand isn't padded, and
you'd scratch up the bottom bow on the stand.

Doesn't seem as secure as the Leblanc stand (which both cradles the
bottom bow and has a leather restraining strap to keep it in place),
and it doesn't hold the horn in playing position (in fact, it holds
the horn turned 90 degrees away), but (1) it is a *lot* lighter, and
(2) I think you can still get one ;-)  This looks like the best
alternative I've seen, as long as Leblanc isn't making any more
stands.

Chip, how many do you have in stock?

Just noticed this one on ebay: a set of *six* Orsi sarrusophones, 19th century, restored playable condition.  Don't yet know what  sizes, pitches, etc., but have questions in.  See http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1483738601
Unfortunately, no pictures either.

The same guy with the set of sarrusophones has also listed a heckelphone for sale (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1483978769), as well as an Octavin and a Heckel bassoon.

The heckelphone serial number (50) dates it to between 1905 and 1912. The opening bid is US$12K...

The octavin auction is at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1483979442, with an opening bid of US$5K (which sounds *way* too high to me).  The notation "straight version" sounds contradictory to the octavin, which is characterized by its bassoon-like fold.

The Heckel bassoon is listed at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1483980903 (opening bid US$6K).  Serial no. "around 4000".

The fact that the seller has 0 feedback (i.e., appears to be a first-time seller), and doesn't provide any pictures (or more than one line of description) is a little troubling, but he at least specifies that he accepts online escrow...

Hi Grant and list fellows

As a collector of brasses, I follow the eBay auctions on assorted brasses in
Germany, in the UK, and in the US.

German auctions are special in that way, that the frequency of auctions
without illustrations is higher than in the two other countries. And they
often lack in detailed descriptions

The German eBay presents one more peculiarity: the seller can specify, that
the high bidder not only pays the auctioned price plus the shipping, which
is fair and normal. The seller can also specify, that the high bidder pays
the eBay fees or a portion of them.

I have complained, that this is agains the general eBay rules. The answer
from the eBay management was, that they fully agreed with my point of view.
But the German eBay section has to work by German laws, which allows the
seller to present such demands. The advise of the management was to avoid
such auctions, as that would teach sellers to abide with general eBay rules.

As  for the instruments mentioned in Grant's mail I am sure they are sold
from the estate of a collector. The seller name suggests something about
having reached the end (maybe also an interest for horses).

I have tried to deal with estates. And I have given up on that, because the
heirs generally overestimate the financial gains from a sale.

Hey, I don't know about you guys, but doesn't 14000
with no reserve sound kinda cheap for six
sarrusophones?  Even if they're all sopranos or
something?  Who wants to pool for it and split the
horns?  Or just own them collectively and use as need
be?  Anyone?

Ah, that makes sense.  I wonder how much the seller knows about the
instruments being offered...
