Subject: [CB] CD Review
Ran across a couple of interesting CDs at Tower the other day:
- "Castel del Monte" by Michel Godard (2000 enja records, ENJ-9362 2): interesting, atmospheric jazz played on tuba and serpent (MG), with Pino Minafra (trumpet & flugelhorn), Gianluigi Trovesi (alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet), Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion), Renaud Garcia-Fons (bass), Pierre Favre (drums & perc), Lucilla Galeazzi (vocal), and Linda Bsiri (vocal & "trumpet marin"). I assume that "trumpet marin" was a mis-translation of "tromba marina", but it is difficult to tell (at least on first hearing)...
- "Hyxos" by Roberto Fabbriciani (2001, Agora, AG275): very contemporary works for various flutes with percussion, piano, etc. One piece for contrabass flute and tape ("Del aura al suspirar" by Maricio Sotelo), and one for bass flute, percussion and tape ("Miroir 1 'Crepuscolo a Foce Verde'" by Daniele Lombardi). Interesting!
Enjoy,Grant

Subject: [CB] New Contrabassoon
There are pictures (and description) of the radically redesigned contrabassoon by Guntram Wolf at http://www.howarth.uk.com/wolfvisit.htm The instrument is folded quite differently from the traditional contra design, having a low A bell that finishes at the top of the instrument pointing up (more like a paperclip contrabass clarinet). He is apparently calling it a "contra forte" (although the name is apparently provisional at present). Range starts at A0 and extends upward 4 octaves or so. According to a member of the contrabassoon list, the bore is wider than the traditional contrabassoon, and the instrument is
correspondingly louder. Also takes a larger reed, more like a sarrusophone...Enjoy!
