certainly very interesting! maybe a reed-woven version of a Hose-o-phone?

BTW, I was at Burning Man a few weeks ago (seems like years now ) and someone showed
up to our band rehearsal with a bamboo saxophone! It was about the size of an alto
but had the voice of a tenor. The sound holes were much more like a Recorder in
spacing but the tone was fantastic - very full!  The owner said it came from Bali,
made by an ex-pat german living in tropical paradise. He told me there were full
orchestras of bamboo saxes on that island and also parts of the Philippines have
some similar instruments - much further research is needed!

Lark in the Morning sells these bamboo saxes as well. You can find them in
their online catalog:

Thanks for the link!

Even I am mostly a brass and recorder man, I really liked the sound samples
of the bamboo saxes.

So I scrolled down the Lark page and found the Maui Xafoon Bamboo Sax . A
different sound, that I also liked. And the price is just so much lower.

Even if the topic at best is within the overtone portion of the contra
range, I have to ask:

Are there any experiences with the Maui Xafoon Bamboo Sax  out thereP

Must be rattanophones, probably an F# bass and a B natural baritone.
Surprisingly useful, but it is difficult to get rid of all the leaks... ;-)

A member of the Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band plays a  version of that
instrument and it is quite amazing - the range and flexibility is very good and the
tone is between a soprano sax and a clarinet. I like it!

BTW, for any musical folks of contra note in the SF Bay Area - feel free to join
LTWCMB and participate in our parades and fun stuff - the audition is not at all
rigorous and if you can sort of play in Bb or sing you are in!

Subject: [CB] Squawks

Thanks Grant & Ken for tips on my squawk problem. The linkages between the
register and Bb holes certainly are complex, though I am sure I can work my
way through them. Bits of sticky label seem to be a good way to try (and in
some cases fix) adjustments: at least they stay in place long enough to
test. I've identified one clear problem: in moving from lower register to
lowish notes in the upper, if I don't get the right hand D key down quick
enough then the upper register key opens momentarily - just enough to start
a squawk.

And thanks for the embouchure tips. I thought Leblanc BBb and EEb used the
same mouthpiece, which took Contrabass Clarinet reeds (mine does). I'll
compare with Bass Sax sometime (there's one in the family, but not here).
Baritone reeds are too long and narrow. Also, so-far I've had more luck with
Rico than Vandoren - to my surprise.

I can't help wondering if the Leblanc register mechanism is more complex
than it logically needs to be. Is there a mathematical language for
converting boolean logic to lever mechanisms? One could start with something
like:
R & Bb = Bb hole
R & D & notBb = lower
R & notD & notBb = upper
and then translate that into the logical minimum of lever movements. Perhaps
a method exists - I'm not an engineer and haven't met one.

Does someone prepare lead sheets, or is this a mass improvisation?

And do they accept sarrusophones?
