An extremely low-pitched chorus of Happy Birthday to the list!  What a
good-humored and knowledgable group it is, too.  I look forward to these
digests and I've learned a lot from you folks since I joined the list in
1998.  Thanks to all of you, and especially to you, Grant, for going to the
trouble to moderate this list and to make contrabass.com such a great web
site.

Best.

I'm making my stupid pet human type this while she thinks my nice bass purr
has made her nod off at the keyboard.  For humans, you people aren't bad, not
bad at all.  You're too nicey-nice, though.  What you should do is sneak up
on those other musicians and take away all their screaming trumpets and
screech stick clarinets and other nasty little monsters and grind them up and
feed them to your friends the bass and contrabass instruments.  That way the
good instruments would get bigger and stronger, and you could exterminate
anything that sounds like a squeaking rat or a peeping birdbrain.  I'll bet a
contrabassoon would love to eat some whining oboes for dinner.  A contrabass
clarinet could probably eat three or four of those little E-flat clarinets a
day.  A sousaphone could swallow a whole bell-full of Baroque trumpets in one
gulp!

Just my 2 cents,
Shadow Cat

But it would ad some undesired overtones!

I also want to throw my thanks out to Grant for starting this list.  It's been a great read and I wish I'd gotten on sooner.  I think I've only been on it about a year now.

Also thanks to everyone on this list for keeping it interesting.  I've certainly learned a lot I would never have learned any other way.

One more thanks to everyone who gave me contra-instrument ideas.  I'm really considering a 5 string bass guitar.  My birthday is coming up.  I can spoil myself a bit.  Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to devote a little more money to my contra pursuits.

And for those of you that were interested.  In the fall I'll be starting my junior year of college at RPI, Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute.  I'm pursuing dual majors.  One in Computer and Systems Engineering and one in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communications.  Keeps me busy but I still have time play bari sax in the pepband, do some theatre, and a myriad of other things.

Here's to another 5 years, if not more, of this list!

Rick

Subject: [CB] octobass

I have a question for any one who is a string player (the few I'm sure) or know about this topic. Since in the Contrabass Compendium there is a section on the double bass, but there is nothing on the octobass. I was wondering (since I know little about it) if anyone has any info on it, or know of any good sites on it?
