VIRUS WARNING

Virus Detected URGENT ACTION BEFORE
1st JUNE 2001 Required!

Folks,

I received this virus warning today. I followed the instructions and sure
enough, my computer was infected. I've got anti-virus software and it did
not pick it up! Please read the following carefully.

URGENT.

A VIRUS could be in your computer files now, dormant but will become
active on June 1. Try not to USE your Computer on June 1st.
FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE IT AND TO REMOVE IT NOW.

No Virus software can detect it. It will become active on June 1, 2001. It
might be too late by then. It wipes out all files and folders on the hard
drive. This virus travels thru E-mail and migrates to the
'C:\windows\command' folder. To find it and get rid of it off of
your computer, do the following.

> Go to the "START" button.

> Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH"

> Go to "FILES & FOLDERS"

> Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive.

> Type in: SULFNBK.EXE

> Begin search.

> If it finds it, highlight it. Do not double click or file will
automatically open.

Go to 'File' and delete it.
Close the find Dialog box
Open the Recycle Bin
Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin
"You should be safe."

The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you have sent
ANY E-mail to in the past few months. Many major companies have found this
virus on their computers. Please help your colleagues and friends !

> DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE. McAFEE and NORTON CANNOT DETECT IT
Jamie
P.S BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BECOME A VIRUS UNTIL JUNE 1ST.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE!!!

This is a virus hoax!  See the following from McAfee:

Hoax Alert - SULFNBK

Dear McAfee.com Dispatch Subscriber:

An email HOAX has been circulating recently that has received a lot of press
and public attention. The subject line may contain "***Virus Alert***" or
mention SULFNBK.exe. If you receive a copy of this message, you should
ignore it. Do NOT pass it on as this is how an email hoax spreads. You may
receive a copy of this message from addresses that you recognize.

DO NOT DELETE ANY FILES FROM YOUR COMPUTER.

There are several versions of this message circulating, in several different
languages. The email message may appear in part as follows:

"A VIRUS could be in your computer files now, dormant but will become active
on June 1. Try not to USE your Computer on June 1st. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW

The email will also instruct you to delete SULFNBK.exe and to pass the

Rest of message deleted--read on!
We had someone here at work delete the file, and he messed up his system,
we replaced the file and it works again.
This just came out this morning on the Tuba-euphonium list

The link to the McAfee page about this hoax is:
<http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99084&>

There is a fix there to restore the unfortunately deleted USEFUL AND
NECESSARY FILE using the Windows backup disk in case you fell for this hoax.

This particular file CAN become infected and perhaps should be scanned using
the latest updates of virus detection software.

Go to the McAfee page for the full official reliable story.
Don't take MY word for it!!!!

Happy New Month!

You have been hoaxed. This file is used by your operating system to handle long file names. Delete it and your system will run, but you will not be able to find files with long names.

This is a HOAX!  The file you are deleting is a vital file that is
standard with any WinO/S!  VERIFY THE VIRUS BEFORE YOU START SPREADING
LIES!

Actually, this is just another hoax.  The reason your antivirus
software doesn't detect the file as a virus is that the file
"sulfnbk.exe" is a *legitimate* file utility that Windows uses to
restore long file names.  The Symantec Antivirus site has a
description of the hoax at
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html,
as well as a link with instructions on how to restore the file if
you've improvidently deleted it already.  This hoax has been sent to
me by several people, and I've seen it on several lists already.

RULE NO. 1: whenever you receive a virus warning, check it out first.
Go to the Symantec site and search for the name of the "virus": 9
times out of 10, you'll find that it is a hoax, and certainly no need
to forward it to anybody.

Relax,

Grant

The day that I can say that I'll never be caught is the day that I have become too cynical.
