After the discussion of the auto ocarina, I don't see why radiator clarinets and exhaust pipe bass
trumpets wouldn't be welcome on this list.  As long as we are stripping the car, any other ideas
for car part cacaphony?

Well, let's see. Cars need periodic tune-ups. There's also tuned
exhaust and tuned suspension. Don't forget the brake drums and
-- the horn!

Craig-

About that horn - I wonder what it would take to make a contrabass auto horn?
Perhaps an air horn with a pair of very long pipes?

During the tune-up, the two pipes could be adjusted for a very menacing
contrabass discord!

I remember taking note of the horn on the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth 2 back
in the mid 70s. It's the size of a tuba. I've always fantasized about putting
a set of air horns like those found on a train - a gang of 3 to 5 - under the
hood of a Volkswagen Beetle, since the engine is in the rear. Perhaps a
couple of old tubas and a trio of baritone horns, all refit with brass reeds.
The possibilities are endless, particularly if you affix servos to the valves
and air pressure regulators to overblow and put them under MIDI control using
a sequencer or dash mounted keyboard. To simplify, a simple system of on/off
switches to close/open each valve plus a knob to control pressure/overblow
for each horn for one beautiful stationary chord that would be activated by a
MIDI trigger in the MIDI system or a simple horn button in the latter. Or you
could get really elaborate and install percussion in the MIDI system and
paint your pickup truck like a circus wagon for parades. <Then, he woke up.>
Good Morning!

Hi All --

Well, it's really sorta possible.  In my younger days a group of us car
crazies put a small block Chevy (with appropriate trans and cut down rear)
into a bug eye Sprite.  Went like hell -- straight, couldn't corner or stop.
Big trucks though we were still moving road kill.  To change their attitudes
one of the residents in our little insane garage took a diesel locomotive
horn that he had and kluged it to a scuba tank.  One hell of a sound!  Yup,
we mounted the horn on the hood and put the tank in the little storage space
in the back (where most cars have a real, honest to goodness opening
trunk.).  Not only did we go straight fast, but everyone knew we were doing
it--until we applied a little too much power and twisted the car into a
pretzel.

Dan.
