Bari can be *very* loud.  They can also cut like chainsaws...  I
think that theoretically a bass sax should be even louder, although
it may be a matter of lung volume keeping up with the higher demands
of such a large-bore horn.

Try it with a Legere reed too - magic on a bass sax....

Wish I was there...

So Paul, two questions:
First, who's bringing the tubax?  Is it on loan, or has someone
actually taken deliver of one in the US now?
Second (of course) - is the performance being recorded?

Thanks,

I recently acquired a bass sax, and I find that lung
volume is the issue when it comes to playing loud.  My
bass has hardly any resistance compared to my bari, so
it'll take as much air as you can put into it.  Then
it will play louder than a bari but only for a couple
of seconds.  If you're playing a real passage of
music, though, a bari can keep a loud volume
consistently, which a bass sax can't.  However,
marching with a bari gives me the lung capacity to
blow any contra-alto clarinet into the next movement
with a bass sax ;-)

Hi, I'm a mere bassoonist but I was intrigued by your list so I thought
I'd join in.  I came across you when searching for information on
racketts - I'm currently severely tempted to buy a Bass Rackett.  I can
add that my 14-year-old son has just switched from Trombone to Bass
Trombone - does this count?  Sadly my daughter never made it any lower
than a standard oboe, in spite of being attracted by the bassoon when
her fingers were too small.

Wondering if anyone out there has opinions on studying music in the US. I'm just doing some research into an inkling of an idea of studying in NY. I am in my first year of a Bachelor of Music - clarinet Performance (I'd like to think of myself as a bass clarinetist) in Brisbane and wondering what's the go with getting into universities and teachers etc etc. It's not as if Brisbane is not happening for me, it's just the US seems like an absolute mecca for clarinet and contemporary music. If anyone has some thoughts or facts about this territory, please feel free to enlighten me. If it helps, some names that people here have mentioned: Dennis Smylie, Michael Lowernstern, Roger Heaton.

Thanks!

Rich Haynes.

Well then, if all you want is loud, why not just go straight to the
source and get a chainsaw?

I have a big Stihl 064 with a 36" bar, and it is far louder than any
Bari, Bass or tuba I have heard or played.

Watch out for the other things the Easter Bunny leaves in your yard.
