Subject: [CB] mouthpieces

something that you guys and girls might be able to help me out with, i know
its not of a 'low' nature but you're all so knowledgable!
recently my roommate accidentally broke my wooden charles bay Bb clarinet
mouthpiece and now we have to look for a *better* one. ive decided its not
worth buying a compromise - something even better would be good. the m'piece
was worth AU$700 and insurance will cover it. so any ideas on a fantastic
mouthpiece? something wooden would be best i think but fill me in on whats
the latest and greatest!
thanks in advance.
rich.
ps. i hope noone minds me writing without capitals! :)

Correct. What I wonder is how both local repair guy and I
overlooked it for so long.

>Leaks cause squeaks on notes in the overtone series.
Also correct, depending on how big the leak is, of course.
If you haven't already, see Bart Hopkin's "Air Columns and
Toneholes", a book for instrument builders. It's available at
windworld.com.

<b>"Please help me. Somebody tell me something awful about those Jumbo
Conns so that I'll lose my craving for one.  Also, if they're supposed
to be so "rare" (or is that just an eBay catchphrase) then why have they been
appearing on eBay frequently lately? Somebody....maybe Tuba Dave?
.....please talk me down. Or sell me a Jumbo. And give me lessons.
Fearfully, Steven"</b>

Ha! Tubadave talkin' here.
I think those jumbo conn sousaphones might be the very best sousys ever
made (as a standard model). I just sold a 20J which has every bit of the
same BIG BALSY FULL RICH TONE that them jumbos have, to Tim Olsen, the
Pres. of the Guild of Americam Luthiers. So you are not the only one
skipping lines & wanting tubalage. Make NO mistake, they are HEAVY. I
have settled for a 4/4, 4-valve Walter Sear (NY, NY now Sear-sound)
front action tuba, and keep an old white conn sousy in the back closet
for them outside &/or roughneck events.

The rare part is understandable, they eb & flow sometimes never to be
seen for quite a while. I've seen HHHorns buy one & have it back on ebay
auction all prettied up & selling for big bucks so you may be seeing the
same horn more than once from time to time.

If I had MY WAY. I would have modeled those WHITE fiberglass horns after
them jumbos, what better way to combat the detriment of plastic, than to
make it sing like an SOB.

Contact Harvshappyhorns on ebay or maybe Joe Selmansberger (from the
tuba BBS) right me & have your wish posted upon my Tuba Page
(http://www.jps.net/tubadave/index6.htm).

Subject: [CB] pics of hammerhead bass flute

This spring I saw a very odd bass flute in my favorite local instrument
store. I took some pictures, and have been meaning to scan them in for the
delectation of my fellow contrabass fiends ever since. I've finally done it!

Here's a link to my description of the instrument and the pictures:

Interesting!  Reminds me of pictures I've seen of old "flute band"
flutes.   Looks like it has range to low B via the extra LH4 key
(assuming the instrument is pitched in C).
