There's a nice web page featuring this instrument, complete with sound samples on the EUCHMI site:

http://www.music.ed.ac.uk/euchmi/ujt/ujt1451.html

Cheers,
Chuck

Thanks Chuck, that's a great page.  The cornet sounds wonderful, almost like a flugelhorn alternating with a Harmon-muted trumpet.  I just wish they were asking less than US$4.5K...

And if you back up a link, there's a similar page for the contrabass serpent, at http://www.music.ed.ac.uk/euchmi/ujt/ujt2929.html.

Can anyone here on the list point me to a book of Bass Clarinet of symphony, opera, band, etc. excerpts?

Years ago I found "World's Favorite #126, Masterworks for Clarinet, book 2, Ashley publications, c 1980, 140 pp.  It has excerpts from 38 composers.  Anyone know of a similar book for bass clarinet?

Thanks,
JW

Subject: [CB] heavy contrabassoon

I have just joined the list and thought that I had better introduce myself.  My name is Laura and I'm 15.  I play the bassoon and contrabassoon. I have a contrabassoon problem and am wondering if anybody can help.  The contrabassoon that I borrow is very heavy and so I have difficulty carrying both my bassoon and contra to rehearsals.  I have thought of making something with wheels on to attach to the existing case.  I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who has tried making something like this or knows where I can buy something (cheaply!!!).

Hi Laura,

You might try using a luggage carrier.  These are typically available
as folding frames with wheels, and often come with elastic cords for
securing one's luggage to the frame.  I just picked up one for my
wife (who typically lugs a number of heavy briefcases) at a
department store for US$10.  The carrier itself is relatively light,
and folds flat.  You could use one by strapping both contra and
bassoon to it, standing on end, although the contra is likely to be
far taller than the carrier.  It may be a bit awkward, but would
definitely save you from a lot of lifting.

A contrabassonist I know got a pair of urethane skateboard wheels and
attached them to one end of the contra case.  Then she used the handle on
the other end to trail it behind her.  I don't know if she attached the
handle or if the contra case already had one.  I imagine a clever person
could attach a board or shelf to the contra case, and then strap the bassoon
case to the contra case.

I'm really tempted to manufacture a combination case, but I have to get
enough $$$ to get a contra first, so I can try some variations.

In the US, there are shops which sell used sporting
goods.  A folding two-wheeled cart for carrying a bag
full of golf clubs sells (used) for $10 - $15 around
here.  Depending on the shape and size of the imnstrument
case, it may be quite easy to strap it to such a cart.
