Yet it seems there is no standardization on key layouts for the notes below
Eb. Are there patent issues which prevent consensus between manufacturers,
or are there simply equally valid schools of thought as to the best approach?

(For example, my Amati has four right-thumb keys for Eb down through C (all
of which require you to simultaneously finger a low E), plus the standard
right-pinky Eb key which requires no other pinky keys.)

(Also, as someone with much practical experience but relatively little
professional training on clarinet: is there a more dignified term for "pinky
keys"?)

Subject: [CB] Bass clarinet CDs

In the last few days, there's been a discussion on the "klarinet" mailing
list about bass clarinet CDs, with some controversy about Michael
Lowenstern's "Spasm" and a long message from me today about Eric Dolphy.  I
tried to cross-post the Eric Dolphy information here, but the majordomo
bounced it because it was too long.  Lelia waxing prolix again....  :-)  If
anyone wants to read the thread, go to the site archives (which are public):

Full search on Klarinet Archives

and search for these subject headings (use them as keywords), with dates
limited to the past week.  The discussion will probably continue for a few
days, I think.  Use the [kl] with the first one so you don't get all the
messages that include that combination of letters!  The original message
headed "Hi" will come up as a quotation in the subsequent ones -- it's
someone new to the list asking for recommendations of good bass clarinet
recordings.

The thread name mutated a bit, but I think those headers will get you around
to the whole thread if you're interested in it.

Cheers--

Nah - there are no schools of thought on this one.  I think it SHOULD
become standardized, but it isn't, mainly because it's an addition to the
Klose-Buffet-Boehm system, and since it wasn't originally part of Klose's
or Buffet's plans for their clarinet, there is no standard for it.  I
think manufacturers are kinda being weenies about it, simply due to their
rivalry.  I think for once, it wouldn't hurt them to collaborate and
decide on some standardization for it in order to benefit the consumer.

Not really.  I've heard the term "cluster" keys before - that is generally
understood, if "pinky" is too unrefined for you. ^_^

I usually use "LH4" and "RH4" for the little fingers.  Not
necessarily a "professional" term, but I think it gets the point
across...  ;-)
