Subject: [CB] Another Big Tuba!!!!!!!!
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

Hey Folks!
Just discovered another giant tuba on the Cerveny/Amati website at:
http://www.amati.cz/english/company/old/bigtuba.htm
For those of you who are html link impaired, that's:
http://www.amati.cz/english/company/old/bigtuba.htm
Looks like this MIGHT be the tuba played by Gerard Hoffnung, but I haven't
compared pictures yet. They say this one needs to be played by TWO people:
one for valves and one for mouthpiece.
Perhaps siamese twins would work together best!
Cheers!

I have a Selmer C-clarinet. It's intonation leaves something to be
desired, though. Tell me, who made the C Bass Clarinet? Has anyone ever
seen one? I know Selmer makes one in A.

Meinl-Schmidt is an entirely seperate entity.  The Meinl name has been
associated with brass makers in the Germanic areas for the last 2 or 3
hundred years.  They are all probably related distantly, but not close
enough that they will admidt it.  Same goes for Rudolf Meinl, Gerhard
Meinl, Boehm & Meinl etc.

I don't think it is the Hoffnung horn, the picture I remember of that was
of a piston valved tuba, probably the one rumored to be at Paxman's in
London.

I wonder who you have to bribe to get to play on that Bohland and Fuchs
tuba though, from the picture it looks to be in perfect condition.

While you are the site, look at the 7 belled helicon and the 20 foot
albert system clarinet pictures.
Also the two belled Jazzophone is interesting.

I think you're right. Still waiting to hear more about the Hoffnung tuba.
I've forgotten who was going to check on it. This Czech tuba may actually be
bigger if you can't reach the valves while playing the mouthpiece. I think I
would have designed it so the mouthpiece was reachable!

Go ahead and ask if you are in the neighborhood! I got to play the
subcontrabass tuba at Harvard just for the asking. If you feel you need to
make a donation to the museum though, make it known! Remember to bring a
camera and a recording device though!

I downloaded all those pictures for my archives!

Cheers!

I've recently received word that my Concerto Vocale--Salmo 126 will be
presented in a concert in Olomouc on June 18, 2000, as part of a festival
presented by Vienna Modern Master. No unusual instruments (although there
are a few unusual playing techniques), just good music!
