Hello,

I was wondering if there was a brass instrument list that was not a
newsgroup but rather a listserv like this.

I need to get details about a trombone.

Cheers, Leo

The mailing list software takes care of that automatically.

Consider it done!

Subject: [CB] CDs!
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

Finally received two of the CDs that Francis mentioned a while ago: Die 14 Berliner Flötisten, and Halil 01 (both are now also posted to the contrabass flute discography page.  Additionally, I also picked up another CD by the Vienna Flautists, "Flauti a la Rossini: Sonate a quatro", which has their arrangements of Rossini's Sonatas 1-3 and 6.  The VF include eight flautists, covering flute, alto flute, bass flute and "subbass flute", which from the picture looks like a bass flute in low F.  Nice!

I noticed on the pictures with the 14 Berliner Flötisten that several of the flutes have additional pads on the head joint.  On the Kotato & Fukushima F soprano, G alto, and C bass, one can see two additional pads: one (about the size of the high C/LH1 pad) which is nearly in contact with the embouchure plate, and a second slightly larger pad 1-2 inches further down the head joint.  Has anyone run across these, and know what they're for?  The pads are mounted in a typical post/rod/spring configuration, but I don't see any keywork for opening the pads during performance.  I *suspect* that these pads cover vibrating membranes, so that one can change the timbre by opening one or both of the pads, and that they're sprung so that they'll stay open or closed.  The contrabass and double contrabass flutes are also by K&F, but don't appear to have this feature.

I too ordered these CDs from the Muramatsu web site, now http://www.muramatsuflute.com/.  There are a few more on backorder...

Enjoy!

Try going to www.onelist.com and searching there and if there isn't one
(which I seriously doubt) try starting one yourself!

I think it's probably not what you're looking for at all, but there's a
brass band list at www.smsltd.demon.co.uk. There are archive posts to
browse on the site.

Grant, I just checked the Muramatsu site and the Berliner Flötisten don't  seem to be listed.  Was this a special order?  Or has this group been dropped from the catalog?

Subject: [CB] New to the list
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

I am new to the contra list, though I was a member for a while several years
ago.  I am a trombonist in Los Angeles, and have put together quite an
arsenal of big horns that may be of interest to Contrabass members.

Among the horns I play:

I have several tenor trombones too, but I think we don't talk about those here.

All the best,

Subject: [CB] Reunion Blues large instrument gig bags
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

I hope this will be of interest to the Contrabass list members.

I am a dealer for selected Reunion Blues low brass gig bags.  The following are some updates on what's new with the comapny and products.  I have a long email update I can send out if you're inerested.  Please ask; I'll send it to you.  It is too long to be posted on the Contrabass list

Contrabass Trombone Bag

The new contrabass trombone bag is finished and ready for production.  This bag is designed to hold all -- contrabass trombones, most cimbassos, and opheclides.  Horns that fit include the following:  Alexander (opera and cimbasso), Glassell, Haag, Latzsch, Minick, Thein (F and Eb), Miraphone 4-valve F contra, Rudy Meinl F cimbasso, C and Bb bass opheclides.  For other instruments, contact me for dimensions.

Though the Miraphone BBb contrabass trombone will fit, it doesn't need a bag this big, and will fit better in the large bass trombone bag, or the large German trombone bag.  If your F contrabass trombone also has a valve section to be played as a cimbasso, there is room for the bell section and both slide and valve sections too.

There was a request for a double contrabass and bass trombone bag, but Reunion Blues has no plans to make one at this time.  However, a tenor trombone will fit in the opposite end of the contra bag.  A padded bell protection disk is available separately.

For opheclide use, the bag is slightly large in width, so some extra foam might be used to snug up the horn in the bag.  For opheclides with a separate leadpipe, a padded accessory bag from the triple trumpet bag is available now.

RB will start production in several weeks, and expects to ship the first order by the end of March 2000, assuming a minimum order, which has not been met yet.

German Trombone Bag

This is a non-catalog bag that RB sells mostly in Europe.  It is the same bag as the medium and large-style bass trombone bags (slide pocket inside), except that it is approximately 6" longer.  We don't know exactly why the Europeans like these, but it can fit horns such as G bass trombones, F bass trombones having a shorter slide than an F contrabass, and large bass trombones with a extended open wrap valve attachment, such as the Thein bass or the Fuchs formerly played by Jeff Reynolds.  In addition, those of you with a Minick bass trombone with a large open wrap section that is prone to getting squished in smaller bags may like this one.  Also, it may be useful for those with a standard sized bass trombone who require more space in the bag for accessories.  This bag has double shoulder straps.

This bag requires a minimum order of 6 to go into immediate production, but a smaller order can be made at the same time as a European production run, which happens several times per year.  For this reason, the wait may be several months for one of these.

I am the exclusive dealer for the the two preceeding bags in the US and worldwide, outside of Europe.  In Europe, contact your local RB retailer, or your local trombone manufacturer.

Bass Sax Bag

Though not in the catalog, RB still makes a Bb bass sax bag.  They are currently out of stock and require a minimum order of six to put the bag back into production.  If you know of several others who might want one, a smaller order could be placed for a slight additional charge, or you can be put on a waiting list until the minimum is achieved.  The bass sax bag fits Selmer bass saxes, which are a medium size, in between the pre and post WW II bass sax styles.  Other models will fit, with a slightly tighter or looser fit depending on the model.

The following bags are regular catalog items, and are available through any RB dealer.  I have more info about these that I can email to you.

If you're interested in one of the bags listed above, please contact me for details.  I can also get most other instrument bags.
