Subject: Public Radio in Las Vegas makes "low" wind & Brass ensembles

Hi, remember me?  the guy who started the International Contra-bassoon
festival several years ago.  Sorry I have been away for a while.  Thank God
that Kevin Damon took over the contra-fest in Park City, UT.  He did an
excellent job last year.

Well, now I work at KNPR Radio station in Las Vegas.  It turns out that one
of our dj guys is a woodwind fanatic and the afternoon dj girl is a Tuba
player.  Combine that with my fanaticism for "low instruments" and you have
a radio station that is ate up with it.  So here goes:

We are going to conduct auditions in Las Vegas of any youth on any
instrument that uses the bass clef.  From these auditions we will put
together a "low" wind group and a "low" brass group.  These two groups will
tour around Las Vegas at a chain of businesses doing afternoon concerts
(something like Starbuck's coffee shops or another similar).

Although the station is eating most costs and production/studio time, there
are a few costs that the station will not do.  These total about $1,000.  I
have found a music sales company in Las Vegas to sponsor half so I still
need someone to sponsor the other $500.  Of course the sponsors will get
great coverage on public radio as the sponsors of this great happening.
Auditions will be open to anyone aged 12 thru 21.  All the high school band
teachers and college orchestra teachers are really into this that we have
talked to.

I tell you all this becz I know that those of you who read this
contrabass-list are all fanatics like me.  We all want to ensure that our
low instruments continue to be strong and upcoming youth musicians have
opportunity to know that they are not pursuing a dead or dieing instrument.
I suppose that someone on this list might be wanting to do the other half of
the sponsoring.  If you do, let me know via email.  BTW, my email has
changed during this last year to mtrinko@prodigy.net

Thanks,
Mark Trinko

Just signed on to the list (thanks, Lelia).  Grant Green invited me to post
an introduction so....

I'm a computer prof in the business school at Loyola College in Baltimore by
day.  I'm a saxophone hobbyist (www.moodswings.com) by avocation.  Just got
a 1920's vintage Buescher bass sax from Gayle Fredenburgh
(www.vintagesax.com).  I'll be using it to play transposed tuba parts in
Loyola's pit orchestras and rhythm parts in Moodswings' dixieland subunits.

I was looking for a bass sax stand.  Lelia Loban suggested L.A. Sax, so I
checked their web site and contacted them.  The reply came today:

>Thank you for your interest in LA Sax.
>All of our representatives are currently in Los Angeles preparing for the
>NAMM show.
>The information you requested will be sent upon their return.

So, in the meantime, does anybody have any suggestions for a stand?

Thanks,

George Wright

Welcome,
I also have a Buescher bass. (To open up that stuffy LH 2nd finger C, use
the side Bb lever. Isn't nearly as awkward as it sounds.)
I've heard that bari stands work ok, but I've never tried.  If you decide
you don't want to mess with a full blown stand, a guitarist's collapsible
foot rest works great for sitting & playing.  And it fits in the pocket of
a Reunion Blues soft case.

The only problems with this, Mark, is that the only woodwinds that
use the bass clef are the bassoon and contrabassoon.  Bass sax, bass
clarinet, contrabass clarinet, sarrusophones, etc., are all written
in treble clef.  Perhaps if you make the requirement the ability to
descend below the bass clef (although this might rule out
euphoniums)...

Last week someone posted that they were having trouble contacting David
Green at Antique Sound Workshop.  I too have not been able to get a
response to multiple emails regarding the purchase of an instrument.
One would think that would engender a quick response from someone in the
business of selling instruments.  Does anyone know what is going on?
Perhaps someone should drop in on him to see if he is still healthy and
kicking, gone on vacation, or what.
Can anyone shed any light on the situation, or at least provide me with a
phone number for him with area code.
Thank you.

Perhaps he's gone to NAMM, with (apparently) the rest of the music world...

ASW has a webpage at http://www.capecod.net/aswltd/, which lists
their telephone number, etc.  I also have a page of contact info at
http://www.contrabass.com/pages/renwind.html for makers/sellers of
Renaissance woodwinds.
