Subject: Cheap Contrabasses in Seattle?
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 23:54:17 GMT
Reply-To: contrabass@contrabass.com

I am a musical youth of a very young age.  I wonder what instruments I might
be able to buy in the $200 to $500 range.  I love contrabass instruments,
but the closest I have is an electric bass guitar unfortunately, although I
will be getting an upright quite soon.  Also, if anyone knows of contrabass
ensembles in Seattle please let me know.

First of all sorry for sending four of the same message, I got lag and hit
the button repeatedly.

It would be great to find another rare instruments fanatic in Seattle,
someone send an email about it. I have been thinking of taking up brass, and
I like the sound of these double belled Euphoniums, where do I go to get
one.JOSH

Good luck finding a double bell euph.

keep watching ebay. I've seen bassoons going for around $500 every once
in a great while. AND I myself have picked up a bari sax for around that
mark ($) as well (two of them matter of fact). Decide what you REALLY
like & will be "in love" with for a few years. try before you buy type
of thing. If you see something on ebay that looks really cool, find a
high school or local college that will let you try one first before you
send your bucks out.

In Tacoma there is a really great guy named Tim. He happens to be the
president & founder of the "Guild Of American Luthiers" & publishes the
guilds Quarterly Magazine about such things (I'm a life-time member).
But He also is into Low Brass instruments, I know because I sold him
several last year. He may know what is going on up there & may let you
bend his ear for a while on such matters, who knows?  (Timothy L. Olsen,

Good luck

I can't believe you guys missed this! It's a really big contrabass
clarinet on Ebay!

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=157421920

This is a pretty rare find on ebay; it's an actual BBb contra, not the
EEb ones that are constantly passing of as BBbs. A great big
instrument, and at a reasonable price; this same instrument from
Woodwind and Brasswind is about $2,000. It's only 800 on Ebay.

Actually, I bought my BBb contrabass off eBay, and shortly after, two more
went up for bid. And quite recently, another BBb was being offered. They're
not extremely rare.

Where can I find the compasses for lower musical instruments in
relationship to the piano? I like to have a reference as to what gets
lower in sound such as the BBb contrabass clarinet or the BBb bass
saxophone for example. Any help would do and be appreciated. Bye

Gerald Corey just made me a terrific contra reed, he's out of Ontario,
Canada and it was under $20 bucks.  He really knows his stuff, you
tell him the sound you want, etc. and he makes it.

I liked it so much that he's making another one for me right now.

I think he's even on this list, but rarely checks his e-mail.  Try him at:
jerrylv@magi.com

or call him at 613-730-2418

Adam-

We didn't say anything because we didn't want anyone bidding against us!

Seriously, this one is up to $1225 with about 40 hours to go.  In my opinion,
it isn't worth much more than this, and maybe less because of the major repair.

Another BBb Contra that didn't meet its reserve price several days ago at
$1225, finished another 3-day sale a few minutes ago, with an even lower top
bid of $990.  (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=158724190)  This is
an older silver "paperclip" LeBlanc model, but is probably worth at least
$2500.  I expect it will be put back on sale within a few hours.  I wonder if
the reserve price is being lowered each time?  (I doubt it.)

Hi,

For those looking for a BBb Contra clarinet, Charles Fail Music
at { http://www.charlesfail.com/ } just put up a vito for sales at $1400
a couple of days ago. I have no relation to CFM, just a very
satisfied customer who bought a used Selmer USA contra alto last year.

Also came across AFFORDABLE MUSIC COMPANY at { http://www.corkpad.com/ }
Guess what? They have single reed mouthpiece for bassoon and contrabassoon
at $34.95 and $36.95 respectively. Apparently, this is in their regular
product catalogue. That means not more bidding for vintage items on ebay
that needs to be sterilize before playing.

Enjoy!

The San Jose Wind Symphony has its season debut this Sunday, at the Gala Opening for the San Jose Mexican Heritage  Center.  Details, including time, directions, and program, are at http://www.sjws.org/home.htm.  Unless they change the program at the
last minute, I'll be playing Bb contrabass clarinet, with Bb bass sarrusophone on one work (bass sax part).

Also, if you click to the "entry" page, you'll find the latest SJWS photo: I'm just to the left of center, holding a bass sarrusophone. On the "Roster" page photo, I'm standing at the right end of the back row, holding the instrument.

I *think* the concert is free...

Enjoy!
