Subject: G. Peletti bass horn

Shortly after I posted the information about an antique G. Peletti bass horn
for sale near Richmond, Virginia, a subscriber to this list e-mailed me to say
that he had bought the horn over the phone and was having it shipped Monday.
Unfortunately, I've just learned that I made a serious error in describing the
bass, and decided I'd better post this information as a cautionary tale.

Someone else, who didn't know the bass had already sold, e-mailed me last
night to ask, "Does the bell point forwards or backwards?"  I replied that it
points forwards.  This morning I received a reply from him stating that this
is not an over-the-shoulder bass.  In my ignorance about tubas, I had
misunderstood the terminology.  I thought that OTS meant that the horn is held
over the shoulder, like a sousaphone, or the way someone would carry a coil of
garden hose.

I didn't realize OTS was a much more specific term for a horn that's worth a
great deal more than other bass horns, and that it means the bell points back
over the shoulder.  The bell on this horn bends forward, like a sousaphone
bell, although it doesn't flare out like that.  It's longer and shaped like a
regular tuba bell.  So I don't know what to call the old monster, but it isn't
OTS.

Here I've been snickering at the dumb mistakes things dealers write about
saxes on eBay and I've gone and done the same thing.  I've now e-mailed the
person who bought the horn to tell him the bad news.  In case it's too late to
undo the deal and he doesn't want this horn once he sees it, I've offered to
buy the bass back for whatever he's got into it including the shipping.  I
live in the Washington, D. C. metro area where I can probably sell a damaged
antique bass (whatever it is).  As I told him, I apologize for my stupid
mistake and next time I think I had better let sleeping tubas lie.

Best--
Lelia

Lelia,

Don't be too hard on yourself.  The horn in question is a Helicon.  While
not as desireable or as rare as an OTS horn, it is still a good
collectable instrument and the price is a fair one.  If it was an OTS
horn, it would be an absolute steal at that price, the few that are
available in nearly destroyed condition are going for close to ten times
that price.

Sounds like it might very well be a helicon!
Check out this <A HREF="http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-
cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=51683681">1888 Conn helicon</A> on eBay to
compare. I have the exact same horn made in 1890, except without the USN
engraving. My band director just bought the 1888'er! You need help unloading
another helicon, drop me a line!!! I know a couple of folks looking for one!
Cheers!
