It doesn't look anything like the Albert alto I had!
My Albert alto was an Orsi, and looked just like a Boehm alto, except in Albert
configuration! I was the brunt of too many "nerd" jokes, so I sold it!

Steven,
I'm dissapointed; you should have stood up for all those Alto clarinet
players out there!  I happen to love my 1962 Selmer Paris Alto Clarinet...
in perfect shape  Sn. ?Q-981?.  Alto's a great instrument; I just think it
needs a second chance!

My director will not allow alto clarinets in 'his' band... he says the main
problem is that companies don't make good ones (meaning bad sound and trashy
tuning)... although I think his request for an Eb soprano *might* have more
problems...

Buffet and Selmer professional models sound quite eloquent and little to no
tuning problems.  They are a very valuable addition to any band; as they
help to complete the lovely (can-be) clarinet choir sound!

This is most likely a clarinet in C, with a bent bell and barrel for
marching.  Body of boxwood, from the keys it looks circa 1900.  These
were common in Germany (not so common in France) at the time of the
first world war.

I concur with this.  I think the main problem with alto clarient is a
viola=player's syndrome; marginal players who can't move their fingers
fast enough to cover third Bb clarinet parts are given shitty
instruments (bundy, vito etc) with soft reeds and so they sound
like---alto clarinets.  A nice LeBlanc., Selmer, Buffet alto or bassett
horn is a full, lovely sound.  And deserves better.

But that awful thing on Ebay is still a marching C clarinet.

I believe you're correct, Robert.  I inquired as to the dimensions of the
horn, and received the following reply:

>Hi,  The measurement from the top to  where it  curved is 19 inches The
>yellow colored part measures  14 1/4 inches. The silver top mouth  piece is

Looks just a little too short to be a Bb soprano.

The newer Vitos are just fine. I think that the average band alto is just in
a poor state of repair.

The new Vitos are great; since they're really just Yamahas with a different
name on them...  The old Vitos were crap, and that's what many schools have.
A new Vito is a god bet; especially when they're available for $600 (I
think!)!!!  I would avoid curved-neck altos though; in my opinion, they have
a much more oboe-ish  sound; which I don't find appropriate; though you
may...

Wow; according to the sellers comments; the bass sax is from the early 40's
or late 50's... is that possible???  I thought that bass saxes virtually
dissapeared during the 40's and didn't return until the Super Balanced
Action and Mark VI Bass Saxes of the 50's and 60's...  Please; someone
explain this period of Bass sax history to me...
Thanks
Tristan
