You mean, you've exploded the myth?

(Sorry, I couldn't resist!)

Hey, WATCH IT! As one who recently acquired a slide saxophone, I must say I resemble that remark!

Subject: Monsters...

Well, we returned from Seattle on Sunday night.  I'm *almost* caught up again...

For in-flight reading, I took along a copy of the Cambridge Companion to
Brass Instruments (1997, Cambridge University Press) - full of interesting
information (including two chapters by Arnold Myers on brass instrument
function and manufacturing practices).

Amongst other things, the chapter on keyed brass described the ophicleide
family as having three members: the alto ophicleide (aka quinticlave) in Eb
and F, the bass ophicleide in Bb and C (the "most common" ophicleide), and
the *contrabass* ophicleide in Eb and F (aka "monstre").  The contrabass
stands 150 cm tall (about 4'11").  The monstre debuted in 1834, and was
played by many of the day's virtuosi.  The last monstre is reported to have
been made in 1858, but a modern reproduction was built in 1989 by Robb
Stewart (an instrument builder/repairman in Southern California, and a
member of the California Gold Rush Band, http://www.gabbf.com/gold1998.html)
for the (now) late Philip Palmer.  RS apparently also made a quinticlave
for PP.

The address I have for RS is
Robb Stewart Brass Instruments
140 E. Santa Clara Street, #18
Arcadia, California 91006
818-447-1904

Anyone live in the area, or familiar with his shop?  If he can recreate
ophicleides, I *bet* he could recreate a sarrusophone or two....

Grant

Subject: CD REVIEW

CD REVIEW:

Here's a few new (to me, anyway) CDs of possible interest, especially to
brass fans.

The Ashley Alexander Big Band - "Powerslide" (1995 DAP Recordings).  This
is pretty much straight-ahead big band jazz, nicely done, led by Ashley
Alexander on "double trombone" and euphonium.  The "double trombone"
appears to be a combination slide-valve trombone, made by Holton (like the
MF Superbone?).  The tracks are:

All arrangements (and keyboards) by Frank Mantooth.  No real "contra"
component here, but the euph solo on Belgrade is nice.

//////////////////
The Dixie Power Trio - "Out of Control" (1993, DPT).  This one you have to
hear to believe.  The DPT consists of Andy Kochenour on tuba, Bert Carlson
on banjo and vocals, and Zach Smith on accordian, cornet, washboard and
vocals (with Byron McWilliams as guest drummer).  These guys must be a riot
to see in person.  The tracks are:

Yes, they do a lot of cover songs.  Orchestrated bizarrely, for their
instrumentation.  Very entertaining!

///////////////////
The Dixie Power Trio - "Greetings From Gumboville" (1995 DPT).  Yep, had to
go back for seconds.  Same personnel (although the drummer is now listed as
part of the group, rather than as a guest).  The tracks are:

Recommended!

///////////////////////////
All of the above are available through Walking Frog Records, along with quite a few more CDs of interest to wind players (like Pat Sheridan's tuba solo CDs).

Enjoy!

Grant
