Subject: DIDJERIDUS

Gday

Tasmanian Garry Greenwood made a leather horn about 21 feet long with a bell
about 4 feet in diameter. Various leather extensions can be fitted to it to
accept mouthpieces for various saxophone and clarinet, and brass. Just
playing the extensions it can be played like a didjeridu. I have recorded on
smaller leather horns made by Garry and been accompanied by Karlin Love
playing a leather clarinet made by Garry.

"The top of the (elevator) car was open, and it was 5 stories high, a
great place to explore the pedal range."

This is interesting - with the top of the car open, you could vary where in
he shaft you played, and whether moving the car to a certain spot "tuned"
the shaft for best response.  Did you do this? What results?

Subject: Slide Saxophone?

For anyone interested, there's a Swanee slide saxophone up for auction at
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=27369301.  The
listing says that there are pictures available, but there's no image on the
web page.  The opening bid is $2350...

Also, a Keilwerth *straight alto* sax, with a black finish, at
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=27067824.  Current
bid is $1425.00, but they haven't hit the reserve yet.

Enjoy!

Subject: Subcontrabass recorder on CD

Hi, just a little

CD REVIEW:

Musica Dolce, "From Byrd to Birds" (1993, Grammofon AB BIS, BIS-CD-57), found at CDNow.  Musica Dolce is a recorder sextet, apparently from Sweden.  The tracks, composer and instrumentation (d = descant/soprano, a = alto/treble, t = tenor, b = bass, c = contrabass, S = subcontrabass, sn = sopranino) are:

The tracks range from Renaissance to modern: all are easy to listen to.  The ocarinas are surprisingly good, sounding much like recorders with the "edge" removed.  Some of the ocarinas are surprisingly deep.

Enjoy!

The freight elevator was "parked in the basement across the hall from the
piano repair shop in the evening.  The doors were not locked, but it
required a key to run the elevator up and down.

Does this mean it has the lack of intonation common in saxophones, and
the player takes on the character of a trombone player?  No wonder it is
a rare instrument.

Yep: trade all your fingering problems ... for trying to find the 12
positions in its chromatic scale...  Not sure that's an improvement ;-)

I'll be surprised if
anyone can answer Jim Katz's question about the maximum possible length of a
human-powered wind instrument.

Well ok, Lelia, then how about the question of what is the longest possible
way to say "I don't know either".....? I really enjoyed your comments, and
only wonder how much you would have to say if I asked a question you *did*
know about!
