Subject: Round, Flat & Piston Valves?

I was scrolling through the microfilm of the Boston City Directory from
1878 and there was an advertisement for Quinby Brothers (formerly Hall &
Quinby), makers of "round, flat and valve instruments". Does anyone have
a clue as to what round and flat valves are? All I can imagine is that
they are woodwind style keys, as were used in 19th century keyed bugles.
The Quinby Brothers were B.F. and George W. Quinby, located at 71
Sudbury Street in Boston, MA in 1878.
Cheers!

Hi,

Bass clarinetist and composer Terje Lerstad now has a web page up, URL= http://home.sol.no/~tlerstad/english.html. It includes a list of his compositions, many including contrabass clarinet and/or contrabassoon (sorry, no sarrusophones).
