Subject: Grainger and Sarrusophones

Bret Newton asks about Percy Grainger's use of the sarrusophone.  While I
don't know any musical particulars, I do know he appreciated the
instruments and advocated their use.

I wanted to bring to this list's attention a remarkable photograph in the
Grainger biography Percy Grainger, The Inveterate Innovator, by Thomas C.
Slattery, publ. the Intrumentalist Co., Evanston, 1974.

Unfortunately, I can't see the page number on my photocopy of this page,
but it's in a special photo section, labeled "Percy and Ella" (Ella was his
wife).  This is a photo of them playing in a sarrusophone trio!  Percy is
on soprano, Ella on alto, and conductor William Durieux on baritone (looks
to be, anyway).  The photo dates from sometime in the 1930s.

Guess Percy figured it was the next best thing to a soprano sax (said to
have been his favorite instrument)!

Subject: Bass Player article on Marcus Rojas

There's an article in the June issue of Bass Player magazine that I think
will appeal to the tuba players and other wind players on the list.  Bass
Player is mostly devoted to electric and string bass players, but in this
issue there's a really good article about Marcus Rojas.  He's a very
talented tuba player, and appeared on the first Gravity cd, Plunge, and
other groups.  It was refreshing to read such a positive article about
the tuba in a mainstream music magazine.

Subject: Bb Helicons For Sale!

Not mine!  ;>

There is a nice Bb helicon with a real big bell at Jack's Drum Shop in
Boston next to Berklee School of Music. Looks like Mr Z has overhauled
it! Great shape! Ask for Silvio Zavarella in the Brass Repair Shop.
Rugburns...I mean Rayburns still has their $3000 Bb helicon in the
window....offer them a thousand and laugh at them!
BTW...the one at Jack's is going for $1500.
I forgot who in Texas was asking!
Cheers!
